When Draugen started oil production on October 19, 1993, it was thought that it would be possible to produce approx. 70 million m3 of oil from the field in 20 years. Since the start, A / S Norwegian Shell has managed to double the reserve base. Here you can read about how this was done and how the work has been organized.

The main job of the Draugen platform’s process plant is to convert the wellstream coming up from the reservoir from a blend of water, oil and gas to products which can be dealt with separately.

Draugen updated – again
Great optimism and enthusiasm dominated the Draugen operations team in early 2012. More oil had been found, and it seemed the nearby Linnorm gas field could be developed by a tie-in to the platform.

Shell acquired the operatorship of production licence (PL) 255 on the Halten Bank on 12 May 2000 with the aim of finding additional reserves to supplement the Draugen field.

The Draugen platform has been highly productive and reliable. Several records were broken when this facility, ranked at the time as the world’s tallest and most northerly, came on stream in 1993.

The Shell organisation began looking at opportunities to expand the oil throughput on Draugen within a few months of the field coming on stream in 1993.

A series of major conversion/modification projects has been pursued on the Draugen platform over the quarter-century since it came on stream in 1993.

Removing the rig
It was decided in January 1997 to dispense with the maintenance-intensive drilling package on the Draugen platform because the well programme had been completed.

The loading system – not without its problems
Oil from Draugen is stored temporarily in the cells at the base of the platform before being pumped via a flowline to a loading buoy. Specially designed shuttle tankers load the crude for shipment to land.
